2019 MLB End of the Season Award Predictions
With the start of the season tomorrow, it's the perfect time to make more predictions, this time focusing on the four main End of the Season Awards that occur following the regular and postseason. As is the case with the other predictions on this blog, these are simply predictions and are meant to be treated as such. While some of them might end up coming true, there's a lot of things that can happen over the span of a 162-game season that can influence the final outcome of what happens.
Most Valuable Player
American League: Mike Trout (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim)
This is really a no brainer. There is no better player in the American League than Mike Trout and unless Trout sustains some sort of season altering injury, he's a slam dunk to win the award again. Trout just received his massive extension, so that is no longer a worry, for him meaning that he can go out there everyday and just be a stud.
National League: Paul Goldschmidt (St. Louis Cardinals)
Simply put, Paul Goldschmidt is primed to have another Goldy-esque season and this time he'll be doing it under the big lights in the Gateway to the West. Goldy will be able to attract a lot more attention than he did during his tenure with the Arizona Diamondbacks and will be the most impactful offensive bat for St. Louis.
Rookie of the Year
American League: Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. (Toronto Blue Jays)
When you look at the Rookie of the Year race in the American League, it's similar to the Mike Trout being named AL MVP. There's really no discussion because of the immense level of talent that Vlad Guerrero Jr. possesses and the fact that he will be a stud in the big leagues. Sure, there are questions regarding his defense, but he will overcome those challenges in time and dazzle during his rookie year.
National League: Fernando Tatis Jr. (San Diego Padres)
Notice a theme yet between the two Rookie of the Year candidates? Both of their names end with a Jr. and that's a credit to their family heritage lines that have brought them to the forefront that they have. Out of the other NL Rookie of the Year candidates, Fernando Tatis Jr. is primed to have quite a season with his flashy glove over at shortstop, to go along with Manny Machado, and his offensive ability looks like it could be sky high too.
Cy Young
American League: Gerrit Cole (Houston Astros)
Do not be shocked if Gerrit Cole shocks the baseball world and has a stellar season for the Houston Astros. Cole finished last season with a 2.88 ERA over 200.1 IP and a strikeout-per-9 rate of 12.4, a career high for him. It should come as no surprise that, even though he is in his walk year and potentially has the distraction of his future, Cole will pair up nicely with Justin Verlander and lead the Houston Astros to the World Series, which will culminate with another World Series title for Houston, as predicated on here.
National League: Noah Syndergaard (New York Mets)
When you think of the New York Mets, you probably immediately think of Jacob deGrom and the outstanding season that he had last year. Well, there's another stud at the top of that starting rotation, who deserves just as much credit and has just as much talent, and that's Noah Syndergaard. You could easily make the case that deGrom and Syndergaard are, one of the Top 3 1-2 punches in the big leagues right now, but this is going to be "Thors" year to reign over Queens.
Manager of the Year
American League: A.J. Hinch (Houston Astros)
Given the fact that it's the Houston Astros year to reign supreme, at least according to us, it should be no surprise that AJ Hinch will once again end the season with an AL Manager of the Year honor. Hinch is a terrific manager who possesses outstanding leadership and communication skills, he knows how to get the most out of his players, and as he has shown before, he knows exactly how to employ the right decisions, at the right time.
National League: Mike Shildt (St. Louis Cardinals)
Mike Shildt is sort of an under-the-radar name for this award, but it's going to certainly be a close race, especially if the Colorado Rockies end up winning the NL West, as predicted on here, and lead the National League in wins. However, with that being said, the St. Louis Cardinals are going to surprise many around baseball with a NL Central Championship and Mike Shildt is going to be the driving force behind that championship.
Sleeper Picks
American League MVP: Alex Bregman (Houston Astros)
National League MVP: Kris Bryant (Chicago Cubs)
American League ROY: Forrest Whitley (Houston Astros)
National League ROY: Peter Alonso (New York Mets)
American League Cy Young: Jose Berrios (Minnesota Twins)
National League Cy Young: Jack Flaherty (St. Louis Cardinals)
American League Manager of the Year: Rocco Baldelli (Minnesota Twins)
National League Manager of the Year: Davey Martinez (Washington Nationals)
